Scorsese set off a firestorm of controversy in October interview with Empire Magazine, when he was asked what he thought of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

‘I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,’ the filmmaker told Empire, which sparked the controversy.

‘Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks,’ he added.

‘It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being,’ he concluded.

His comments came months after Marvel’s blockbuster Avengers: Endgame broke box office records for highest opening weekend ($357.1 million) and highest global gross ($2.797 billion).

A month later, Scorsese tried to clarify his thoughts with a lengthy  opinion piece.

He stated that the people who make Marvel Studios are, ‘people of considerable talent and artistry. You can see it on the screen.’

However, he added, ‘The fact that the films themselves don’t interest me is a matter of personal taste and temperament.’

‘I know that if I were younger, if I’d come of age at a later time, I might have been excited by these pictures and maybe even wanted to make one myself. But I grew up when I did and I developed a sense of movies — of what they were and what they could be — that was as far from the Marvel universe as we on Earth are from Alpha Centauri,’ he added.

Scorsese’s interview came as he was promoting his new film The Irishman, which had a brief theatrical release before debuting on Netflix at the end of November.

He also has a number of projects he’s attached to direct, such as Killers of the Flower Moon, and Roosevelt, a biopic of President Theodore Roosevelt.

He is also slated to direct the TV series The Devil In the White City, which has Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star.
